This Little Iron Fish May Be The Solution To The World’s Anemia Problem
Canadian inventor Dr Christopher Charles hopes that the ‘Lucky Iron Fish’ will help eliminate iron deficiency, even in poorer countries.
Iron-deficiency, most commonly known as anemia, is becoming a worldwide problem with approximately 2 billion sufferers. It’s the most common nutritional problem and is very easily remedied by supplements — but these supplements are often not available or affordable for many. This is especially true for poor farming families in rural Cambodia where almost half of the Cambodian population is iron deficient.
When Dr Charles travelled to Cambodia as a science graduate he found children were often too small and weak to even play, with some also suffering from slow mental development. Adults didn’t fare any better: they were plagued by painful headaches that left them unable to work. With barely enough money to put food on the table, these families definitely couldn’t afford the daily iron tablets that could improve their health tremendously. Dr Charles came up with the idea of a wedge of iron that they could cook with and in turn raise their intake of iron significantly.
The doctor explains the simple process of using the fish: “Boil up water or soup with the iron fish for at least 10 minutes… you can then take it out. Now add a little lemon juice which is important for the absorption of the iron.” Food cooked this way does not taste differently, and the fish itself lasts for many years. More than 2,500 people are now cooking with the fish in Cambodia. And after just 9 months of using it every day, a 50% decrease in anemia has been observed, as well as a dramatic increase in users’ iron levels. Success! It doesn’t stop there, Dr. Charles is planning to unleash the little fish, probably in other shapes, to other developing countries. If you’re feeling inspired and want to help the Lucky Iron Fish cause, you can buy a fish for yourself and another will be delivered to a family in need or for the same amount. You have the option of a whole school of 5 fish which will help five families in need.
