The Story Of This Pit Bull Is Both The Best And Worst Thing I’ve Ever Seen

Animal abuse is always hard to stomach, the fact that these defenceless pets who are so desperate for our love are treated so abhorrently is a concept most of us can’t get our head around. Faith in humanity gets seriously questioned on these occasions – but – every now and then somebody steps in and gives you a little hope.

When a pit bull was suffering from severe starvation and injury, death was almost a certainty.

Until he was found by Wilson Coutinho Martins of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Martins has dedicated his life to rescuing and protecting animals from extreme conditions

Which has, rightly so, made him a hero to animal lovers the world over

For dogs like Davi, this pit bull on the brink of death, he is their saviour

The large dog with beautiful green eyes was rescued from the woods outside Rio in September 2012

He weighed just 28 pounds and had a huge wound around his rear

His bone was exposed and he could barely walk from the pain and if he was not found at that time, he would have surely died from infection and blood loss

Wilson took him home and tended to his wounds – which involved several blood transfusions at the vets, antibiotics and regular bandaging

Within a month, his wounds were much better

As time went on, his recovery continued and he gained much needed weight

Though the journey was slow, the recovery was miraculous

He is proof of how dedication, hard work and love can transform animals in even the most desperate circumstances

The photograph documentation of the recovery are both heart breaking and heart warming

You can see how happy Davi is now

And his body looks so much healthier and full of life

This is Davi more than a year after he was found

And this Brazilian hero may just be my new favourite person

Stories like this are always full of mixed emotions but I think it’s not a subject people should shy away from or ignore, despite how hard the first photos may be to take. Another case similar to these involved a baby husky, who had his legs broken and his mouth literally tied together for so long his teeth rotted – I will never come close to understanding how people can do these things.
