The Selfie Arm Will Make Your Selfies Infinitely More Sad

Selfie sticks seemed incongruous to me from day one. I don’t know what century or universe they belong in, but these odd metallic creatures seem out of place amongst the rest of society. Having used one once, I can confirm that when using a selfie stick you feel like a penis as much as you look like a penis.

Society as a whole seems to be turning against the selfie stick, however. The list of places which have banned the selfie sticks include the National Gallery in London, the Wimbledon Tennis Championships and the Smithsonian Group. In South Korea the unlicensed sale of a selfie stick could land you with a fine of up to $26,000.

While their decline seems certain, a new variation on the selfie stick has recently come into existence. The “selfie arm” aims to give the illusion that you’re enjoying your life with a friend or loved, when in fact you’re as alone as you’ve always been.

If any of the pro selfie stick camp are hoping that this is a good sign, think again. The selfie arm was made by two New Mexico artists – Justin Crowe and Aric Snee. They created the piece as a comment on “connectedness” and “sociableness” – and technology’s illusory provision of the two.

So it seems that critical Crowe and sneering Snee have absolutely no love for the selfie stick or indeed the selfie arm which they created. The pair describe the piece as “the sarcastic solution to a quintessential problem — nobody wants to look alone while they mindlessly snap pictures of themselves.” They have also stated that it’s only a prototype – which is just as well considering that they would probably dislike the people they were selling it to.

Personally, I’m glad to hear that these ridiculous objects haven’t been released onto the mass market. Perhaps the tide turning against the selfie stick is a good sign – that there’s hope for human race after all.
