Next Time Someone Mocks Teachers, Just Show Them This

Lots of people dream of growing up and becoming astronauts, firemen or professional football players. As I was growing up, I dreamed that one day I’d be a teacher. I guess it was based on an admiration and respect I had for my own teachers, I went from a “girl with potential that’s wasted by bad behaviour” to Head Girl hitting grades I never thought I could; all because a few inspirational teachers made the extra effort for me.

Anyway, I ended up becoming a journalist so my happy ending hasn’t played out just yet but the dream is still alive. I’ve got a few friends who teach and despite it being an extremely difficult and time-consuming job, the little snippets of appreciation from kids and seeing you’re making a difference can make it worthwhile. Many of you will probably wonder why anyone would want to become a teacher – I mean “what does a teacher even make?” – this is what they make.
