30 Things You HAVE To Stop Doing To Yourself. #10 Is Absolutely Vital
An interesting trait about human beings is that we all do things that are detrimental to our happiness, career and health. For example, smokers know that smoking will greatly increase their risk of lung cancer, that’s been proven, but it doesn’t make a difference. Similarly with eating and drinking too much. Nobody got fat or drunk by accident, as Radiohead so aptly put it, “you do it to yourself, just you, and that’s what really hurts.”
The aforementioned examples are well documented, and the aim of this article is not to tread beaten ground. This piece looks at the day-to-day things that may slip under the radar, but are detrimental to your happiness and prosperity, therefore we should stop doing them immediately.
1. Stop spending time with the wrong people.
Life is too short to spend time with people who suck the happiness out of you. That goes for both friendships and relationships – if someone wants you in their life, they’ll make room for you. You shouldn’t have to fight for a spot. Walking away is always difficult, but hey, life ain’t a picnic. The hard decision is often the right one.
2. Stop running from your problems.
Always remember that nobody is capable of flawlessly handling every punch thrown at them, except Floyd Mayweather. We’re made to get upset, sad, hurt, stumble and fall. Because that’s the purpose of life – to face problems, learn, adapt, and solve them. Chumbawamba hit the nail on the head when they sung, “I get knocked down, but I get up again, you’re never gonna keep me down.” Resilience is an essential string to your bow.
3. Stop lying to yourself.
You can life to anybody else in the world, but not to yourself. Our lives can only improve after we begin taking responsibility for our actions. Honesty really is the best policy.
4. Stop putting your own needs on the back burner.
A very common and painful thing is losing yourself in the process of loving someone too much. Yes, help others; but help yourself too. It’s amazing how easily you ca solve other peoples’ problems while putting off your own. If there was ever a moment to follow your passion and do something that matters to you, that moment is now.
5. Stop trying to be someone you’re not.
The world is constantly telling you that you’re not good enough, f*ck them. Someone will always be prettier, someone will always be smarter, someone will always be younger, but they will never be you. Don’t change so people will like you. Be yourself and the right people will love the real you.
6. Stop trying to hold onto the past.
8. Stop berating yourself for old mistakes.
We all make mistakes, have struggles, and regret things in our past. But you are not your mistakes, and you are here NOW with the power to shape your day and your future. As some wise old dude once said, “don’t cry over spilt milk”, no truer words were ever spoken.
9. Stop trying to buy happiness.
Many of the things we desire are expensive, and for a few days after a new purchase, you may well feel good. But that’s a short term solution. The best things in life really are free – love, laughter and purpose. Buying more and more is an attempt to fix internal problems externally, and that never works.
10. Stop exclusively looking to others for happiness.
If you’re not happy with who you are on the inside, you won’t be happy in a long-term relationship with anyone else either. You have to create stability in your own life first before you can share it with someone else.
